Bottle Capping Machine: Closures, Feeding & Acceptance
Choose the capper from the complete bottle-and-closure system. Cap sorting, engagement, application and inspection all belong in the equipment scope.
Start with the closure family and controlled drawings
| Closure | Application question | Quality evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Screw cap | How are caps fed, engaged and tightened without cross-threading? | Application setting, removal torque method, cap height and leakage checks |
| Pump or trigger | How are dip tubes handled and the head oriented? | Correct engagement, tube condition, orientation and leak result |
| ROPP closure | Do the cap, neck and forming tooling match? | Formed thread, pilfer-band condition and agreed closure checks |
| Press-on or snap cap | How is application force controlled and the bottle supported? | Seating height, retention and leak test |
| Crown closure | Are bottle finish, crown and crimp tooling compatible? | Crimp condition and the closure-maker’s relevant checks |
These closure types are not interchangeable. Supply bottle-neck and closure drawings, material information and samples from the intended sources. A cap diameter alone does not identify the application duty.
Separate application settings from finished-package results
A tightening setting is not automatically the removal torque a user will measure later. Closure materials, liners, product contact, storage time and temperature can influence the finished result. Specify when and how measurements are made, the relevant package condition and who approves the acceptable range.
Do not use a generic torque table as the sole specification for an unknown bottle and cap. Work from the closure and container requirements, then verify the combination on the proposed equipment. For induction-sealed packs, liner compatibility and sealing-process checks are additional requirements.
Cap handling can be the real bottleneck
- Define how caps arrive: bags, boxes, bulk feed or oriented trays.
- Check elevator, sorter, chute and buffer capacity at the required sustained rate.
- List all change parts for each closure, neck finish and bottle size.
- Define missing-cap, crooked-cap and blocked-discharge behavior.
- Verify bottle support so the body or neck is not damaged during application.
- Assign the interface between filler discharge, capper infeed and downstream inspection.
Ask for a run that includes cap replenishment and restart. A brief demonstration with manually pre-positioned caps does not prove automatic feeding performance. Trigger heads and pumps may require a different feeding approach from simple screw caps.
A closure acceptance record worth keeping
| Record field | Example of what to enter |
|---|---|
| Package identity | Bottle and cap drawing revisions, supplier lots and liner |
| Machine setup | Tooling, head/chuck, recipe and operating speed |
| Test condition | Filled product or agreed substitute, temperature and time after application |
| Measured outcome | Individual readings, cap height, tamper feature and agreed leak results |
| Defects | Missing, tilted, cross-threaded or damaged closures by type |
| Recovery | Replenishment, stop/restart, reject confirmation and open issues |
The sample size, method and limits must be agreed for the project. Retain the raw readings and identified samples; a passing average can hide a defective head or a subgroup of packages.
Buyer questions
Can one capper handle screw caps and trigger heads?
Some equipment can be configured for both, but feeding, tube handling, tooling and orientation may differ substantially. Ask for a supported-format list and a changeover demonstration.
Does a higher torque always stop leaks?
No. Excessive application can damage a closure, liner or neck. Find the correct package-specific conditions and verify the sealing result.
Should the capper match the filler’s nameplate speed?
Compare sustained rates on the same container and closure, including feeding and recovery. Also verify the line controls and accumulation between machines.
