Turn a searched BPH number into a realistic filling-line specification

Buyers often search for 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 12,000 or 24,000 BPH lines, but a nameplate number is not daily saleable output. Bottle volume, product process, cleaning, changeovers, rejects, line balance and final packing all affect the result. Choose a capacity route below, then use one output basis across every supplier quotation.

Five numbers every capacity quotation should state

Use each item as a written quotation checkpoint. Ask suppliers to mark included, optional, excluded or buyer-supplied and attach the evidence that will confirm the final choice.

Reference package

Bottle or can volume, dimensions, neck or end, weight and approved samples used for the capacity claim.

Reference product

Water, juice, CSD, beer or other liquid plus temperature, viscosity, foam, particles and cleaning route.

Rated machine speed

The named equipment speed under defined conditions, separated from total-line and saleable output.

Sustained line output

Good containers or finished packs per hour during an agreed test window, including the measured location.

The assumption used for shifts, short stops, sanitation, format changes and rejects; not a hidden guarantee.

From search to specification

A four-step method for choosing BPH or CPH without oversizing the line

Capacity selection begins with saleable demand and ends at the finished pack. These steps help translate a popular search number into an operating model that suppliers can test.

    Start from saleable demand

    Estimate daily demand by SKU, peak season, inventory policy and expected growth. Separate current demand from a future expansion case. A single ambitious speed number can create unnecessary capital cost, utilities and changeover losses, while a line selected only for today may constrain distribution growth sooner than expected.

  2. 02

    Build an operating calendar

    List shifts, scheduled hours, sanitation, startup, planned maintenance, format changes and product changeovers. Apply a transparent planning efficiency rather than assuming every scheduled minute produces good containers. Keep the calculation editable so buyers can compare one-shift, two-shift and future-demand scenarios before selecting the machine band.

    Find the real bottleneck

    Compare rated and effective capacity for treatment or mixing, bottle blowing or depalletizing, filling, closing, labeling, inspection, packing and pallet handling. State the reference package and product at every stage. The slowest sustained stage and the available accumulation determine practical line output, not the largest number shown in a brochure.

    Define the output test

    Write where good output will be counted, the approved container and product, run duration, allowed stops, quality checks, reject treatment and required records. Distinguish filler speed, integrated-line speed and finished-pack output. Suppliers can then size equipment and quote performance against the same measurable acceptance basis.

How do I convert daily demand into required BPH?

Divide the daily saleable-container target by scheduled production hours and a realistic planning efficiency. Then review sanitation, changeovers, growth and the slowest integrated stage before selecting the rated capacity.

Q2

Does 5,000 BPH mean 40,000 bottles in an eight-hour shift?

Not automatically. That multiplication ignores sanitation, startup, short stops, rejects and changeovers. The project should state the planning efficiency and whether output is measured at the filler or as finished packs.

Q3

Why does bottle size change the actual capacity?

Larger or unstable containers change filling time, conveyor behavior, label application and packer output. Every capacity claim should name the reference bottle or can.

Q4

Should the packer run faster than the filler?

The packer and conveyors need enough effective capacity and accumulation to prevent routine filler stops. The required margin depends on pack pattern, line dynamics and operating strategy.

Q5

What is the difference between BPH and CPH?

BPH means bottles per hour and CPH means cans or containers per hour depending on context. Always define the unit, package and measurement point in the quotation.

How should capacity be tested during FAT?

Agree product or substitute, package samples, warm-up, test duration, output location, rejects, quality measurements, permitted stops and pass criteria before the test.

Can one line maintain the same speed for every SKU?

Usually not. Bottle size, fill volume, product condition, cap, label and pack format can change the limiting machine and changeover requirement.
