Filling Machines for Viscous Liquids: Product Trial Guide
Select viscous-liquid filling equipment from the behavior of the actual product, including its slowest normal condition. The feed system and nozzle matter as much as the metering unit.
Describe the product at the filling temperature
A viscosity value needs context: temperature, measurement method and, for non-Newtonian products, the relevant shear condition. Sauces, creams and gels can flow differently after mixing, pumping or standing. A single “thick liquid” description does not tell a supplier how quickly a dosing chamber will refill or how the nozzle will stop.
| Product feature | Information to send | Configuration decision |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature sensitivity | Lowest and highest normal filling temperatures | Feed path, heating scope and rate at the coldest duty |
| Particles | Largest dimensions, concentration and fragility | Valve and nozzle passage, pump choice and particle-preservation trial |
| Stringing or drips | Video after the flow stops | Shutoff position, suck-back, nozzle geometry and neck cleanliness |
| Entrained air | Mixing and transfer process, observed bubbles | Supply method, settling needs and dose verification |
| Shear sensitivity | What texture or emulsion changes are unacceptable | Pump family, speed and handling sequence |
| Cleaning limits | Recipes, residues and changeover requirements | Drainability, access, disassembly and cleaning validation scope |
Choose the full product path
Review the mixer outlet, transfer equipment, hose or pipe, hopper, metering unit, valve and nozzle together. A capable filler can still deliver short fills when the inlet cannot replenish product before the next cycle. Long hoses, a low vessel level or a colder batch may expose a feed problem that a warm demonstration does not show.
A piston system is a useful comparison for discrete volumetric doses. A suitable positive-displacement pump can offer a different approach to continuous feed or a broad filling range. Neither choice eliminates the need to test particle passage, air pockets, product damage and cleanout. A heated hopper should be specified only when the product and process permit it.
Trial plan for a sauce, cream or paste
| Trial stage | Record | Acceptance question |
|---|---|---|
| Start of batch | Product temperature, supply level and setup | Does the first stable output meet the agreed dose? |
| Normal running | Fill values by head, cycle time and nozzle cutoff | Can the required good output be sustained without neck contamination? |
| Low supply level | Dose trend and refill behavior | Does the product path remain fully supplied? |
| Pause and restart | Settling, separation, first fills and rejects | Is recovery controlled and documented? |
| End of batch and cleanout | Recoverable product, residue and elapsed time | Does the cleaning and product-loss scope fit the campaign plan? |
For a particulate product, retain before-and-after samples and compare the agreed texture or particle-integrity criteria. A clear liquid substitute may demonstrate motion and controls, but it does not prove viscous-product performance.
Example: why temperature belongs in the output claim
If a smooth product fills in four seconds when warm but needs seven seconds at the lowest normal temperature, sizing the line only from the warm result overstates capacity. Add the measured handling portion to each fill time, then calculate the head count for both cases. The difference may justify controlled product conditioning, more heads or a revised shift plan; it does not justify an unsupported speed guarantee.
Buyer questions
Can one machine fill honey, sauce and lotion?
Possibly, but the full product range must be checked for feed behavior, wetted materials, particles, cleaning and cross-contamination constraints. Shared viscosity does not make the applications equivalent.
Will a bigger nozzle solve slow filling?
It may reduce flow restriction, but the bottle opening, cutoff quality, splashing, particle path and upstream feed can still be limiting. Test the whole circuit.
