Linear vs Rotary Filling Machine: Output & Changeover
Choose an architecture that fits your production schedule. Linear and rotary describe container movement; either still needs the right dosing method for the liquid.
Compare the production pattern before the headline speed
| Decision | Indexed linear filler | Rotary filler |
|---|---|---|
| Bottle movement | A group stops for filling, then indexes onward | Containers travel through a carousel and timed transfer system |
| Useful starting point | Mixed formats, smaller campaigns and staged automation | Long campaigns and a stable container family requiring continuous output |
| Format review | Guides, nozzle spacing, height, recipes and indexing setup | Starwheels, guides, neck handling and transfer timing, depending on design |
| Main capacity question | Can the full batch cycle meet the slowest SKU duty? | Is there enough filling residence time at the requested carousel speed? |
| Changeover evidence | Operator tasks, tools, parts and first-good-bottle time | The same evidence, including every transfer and integrated module |
| Total investment | Include labor, conveyors and future modules | Include line balancing, format parts, utilities and service access |
Two production scenarios with different answers
Scenario A: six SKUs in short daily campaigns. A linear proposal may be attractive if accessible change parts and cleanout reduce downtime. Suppose five format changes take 20 minutes each: that consumes 100 minutes before cleaning is counted. Doubling catalog speed will not recover those minutes unless changeover also improves. Ask each supplier to demonstrate the complete sequence between your two most different packages.
Scenario B: one main bottle running several shifts. A rotary proposal may justify its investment when the full line can sustain its output. Check how bottles enter and leave the carousel, the time available for filling and pressure handling where relevant, cap availability, discharge accumulation and packer recovery after a stop. Continuous movement does not remove the need for controlled starts and rejects.
Compare a weekly schedule, not one perfect hour
- List good bottles required for every SKU, fill volume, product state and packaging format.
- Calculate run hours from demonstrated good output for that SKU.
- Add format changes, cleaning, startup losses and planned maintenance separately.
- Assign realistic staffing to bottle supply, cap supply, inspection, packing and material replenishment.
- Compare the occupied footprint plus operator, service and material-access space.
- Ask how the line expands: extra heads, another shift, another filler or a different line architecture.
Use one weekly schedule for both proposals. A lower purchase price can be offset by more operators or long cleanouts; a higher-speed machine can be unnecessary if orders arrive in small batches. These are project trade-offs, so compare the actual schedule and quoted service scope.
Questions that prevent an architecture mismatch
| Ask for | Reject an answer that only says |
|---|---|
| Output on the slowest SKU, with fill and closure results | “Maximum speed” without package or product conditions |
| A timed full format change from last good bottle to next good bottle | “Quick change” without tasks, parts and operators |
| A drawing showing maintenance and material access | Only the filler frame dimensions |
| The supplier responsible for every line interface | “Compatible with other machines” without drawings or signals |
| A test of starvation, blocked discharge and restart | Only uninterrupted running with empty bottles |
Buyer questions
Is rotary always better for a large bottle?
Bottle size alone does not decide the architecture. Fill time, container strength, handling, product state and output determine whether a rotary or linear proposal fits.
Can a linear line be automated fully?
Yes, linear filling can be integrated with automatic infeed, capping, labeling and packing. Linear describes the machine arrangement, while automatic describes how tasks are controlled.
