Pump Filling Machine: Pump Types, Dosing & Calibration

A pump filling machine needs both a suitable product-handling pump and a defined dose-control method. Specify them together before comparing speed or accuracy.

Pump-filling configurations to compare

ConfigurationEquipment boundaryUse to evaluate
Semi-automatic dosing stationOperator-presented containers with a defined pump and nozzleFlexible small campaigns
Automatic inline pump fillerContainer indexing, dose control, feed supervision and cutoffRepeated runs requiring controlled handling
Dedicated product-contact circuitMatched pump, seals, hose or tube and cleaning accessProducts with specific compatibility or changeover needs

These describe configuration choices, not named stocked models. Exact supply, drawings, materials and performance are confirmed in the project quotation.

Name the pump and the dose-control method

A pump can move product to the filler, meter each dose, or perform both functions. Ask whether the machine controls pump revolutions, running time, a flowmeter signal or weighing feedback. Those arrangements have different calibration, turndown and product-condition requirements.

Pump family to evaluateReason for considering itLimits to test
GearRepeatable displacement of suitable smooth productsShear, abrasive material, seal compatibility and viscosity changes
LobeProduct handling where passage size and gentle transfer matterPulsation, slip at the duty condition, particle integrity and cleanability
Progressive cavityControlled transfer or dosing of some viscous productsRotor/stator compatibility, wear, dry-running protection and cleanout
PeristalticA replaceable tubing product path for compatible applicationsTube fatigue, compression, recovery, chemical compatibility and output

These are selection directions. A pump family name does not establish compatibility with every food, chemical or cosmetic formulation. The supplier should identify the proposed wetted materials and operating limits.

Trace the product from vessel to bottle

Draw the supply vessel, inlet, pump, discharge line, valve and nozzle. Mark what is supplied by the buyer and what is included with the machine. Record normal product level, line lengths, any inlet-pressure constraints, temperature range and cleaning sequence.

A dosing system that calibrates well with a full tank can behave differently near the end of a batch. Air entering the suction path, seal wear, tube aging or changing backpressure can affect the delivered dose. Include a low-supply condition and a restart in the sample trial.

Calibration is a controlled procedure

  • Identify the product, temperature, target dose, pump configuration and nozzle.
  • Measure an initial series with an appropriate independent measurement method.
  • Adjust the permitted dosing parameter and record the change.
  • Verify a fresh series instead of reusing the adjustment samples as proof.
  • Check the minimum and maximum required doses, plus the slowest or most difficult product.
  • Define when re-verification is required: tube or seal replacement, product change, maintenance or a drift alarm.

Store the recipe together with the hardware revision and calibration record. A saved recipe alone cannot restore performance after a different hose, tube, nozzle or product condition is introduced.

Nozzle and cleaning questions that belong in the RFQ

QuestionWhy it changes the equipment scope
How is a clean cutoff produced?Shutoff location, suck-back and diving motion affect drips and cycle time
How is product recovered before cleaning?Dead volume and access affect product loss in small campaigns
Which parts are removed between recipes?Disassembly and seal handling affect staffing and changeover duration
How are incompatible products kept separate?Dedicated contact parts or separate circuits may be required
How is the pump protected from an empty supply?Detection and safe recovery need to be part of the controls

Buyer questions

Is a transfer pump the same as a dosing pump?

No. A transfer pump is selected to supply flow. A dosing arrangement also needs a defined way to measure or control the quantity delivered to each container.

Does a peristaltic product path mean the whole process is sterile?

No. A replaceable tube changes the contact path, but cleanliness or sterility depends on the entire process, components and validated procedures.

Can changing pump speed fix all filling drift?

No. Check product conditions, supply, air, wear and measurement first. Changing speed can mask a fault or create another one.
