Piston vs Gravity vs Overflow Filling: What Changes?

Start with the quantity or appearance the finished package must control. Piston, gravity and overflow filling solve different problems, even when the machines look similar.

The key distinction: what is being controlled?

MethodPrimary controlConsider whenVerify before selection
PistonProduct displaced by cylinder strokeA measured volume of a viscous or semi-viscous product is neededComplete cylinder refill, seals, valve passage, particles and cutoff
Timed gravityFlow during an open valve intervalA free-flowing, non-carbonated liquid has a stable supply conditionLiquid head, viscosity, valve timing, tank refill and nozzle flow
OverflowLiquid level determined by the return portA consistent visible fill line matters in compatible bottlesBottle seal and rigidity, return circuit, foam and recirculation suitability

Gravity can also be part of a different control system, such as weighing feedback. Ask a supplier to name both the driving force and the dose measurement method. “Gravity filler” on its own does not establish how the final quantity is controlled.

Equal level is not equal volume

Imagine two nominally identical bottles whose internal capacities differ. Filling each with 500 mL can leave different visible levels. Filling both to the same shoulder mark can instead deliver different volumes. Neither appearance nor a machine display is a substitute for a defined fill-quantity check.

For a clear retail bottle, compare a level-fill trial with a volumetric trial using bottles from several production lots. Measure the delivered quantity and photograph the shelf appearance. Agree how container variation and fill results will be assessed before selecting the method.

Three application examples

Product and packageFirst comparisonEvidence that changes the answer
Thin non-carbonated cleaner in a clear bottleTimed gravity versus overflowFoam persistence, bottle deformation, seal quality and allowable recirculation
Sauce with soft pieces in a wide-mouth jarPiston versus a suitable positive-displacement pumpLargest particle, concentration, texture damage and cleanout results
Oil sold by mass in several container sizesNet-weight versus volumetric dosingTare variation, density basis, stable weighing time and target quantity

These are screening directions, not universal product approvals. Heating a product, changing its recipe or switching the container can change the selection. Provide the range of product conditions instead of only the easiest sample.

Run a fair three-method comparison

  • Use the same representative product batch, filling temperature and approved container samples.
  • State whether acceptance is by mass, volume or visible level, and how that result will be measured.
  • Record good output, rejects, drips, foam settling, product recovery and cleanout time.
  • Compare complete supply and return paths, not only the nozzle or machine frame.
  • Include every change part, pump, tank, sensor, capping interface and cleaning accessory in the quoted boundary.

Do not select from a single advertised accuracy percentage. Ask whether it is a maximum deviation, a repeatability statement or an average result, and which fill size and measurement method it uses. A percentage without its basis cannot be compared reliably.

Technical background

The distinction between level filling and displaced-volume filling is described in the equipment-maker references from Accutek on overflow filling and Accutek on piston volumetric filling. These references explain principles; they do not certify an Allot Tech configuration.

Buyer questions

Does a piston filler make every visible level identical?

No. It controls displacement, so bottle-capacity variation can still produce different visible levels. Check the filled quantity and appearance separately.

Is overflow suitable for any foaming product?

No. The return system may help some applications, but recirculation can also change aeration or product behavior. Test the actual formulation and required output.
