Servo Piston Filling Machines: Recipes, Doses & Configuration
A servo piston filler controls piston travel and motion electronically. Compare its recipe and motion functions alongside the cylinder, feed, valves and nozzle that actually deliver the product.
What the servo drive adds
Servo control can set piston travel and its motion profile through a recipe. It can make a saved setup easier to reproduce and allow different speeds within a stroke. Those functions are distinct from the delivered-dose tolerance of the complete machine.
| Configuration feature | Useful when | Verify on the proposed machine |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic stroke setting | Changing between dose recipes | Usable cylinder range and reproducibility after returning to a recipe |
| Variable dispensing speed | Managing splash, foam or product cutoff | Quantity and package cleanliness with the real product |
| Refill profile | A viscous product needs time to refill the cylinder | Full refill at the lowest normal supply condition |
| Independent or shared drives | Several heads need to be balanced | Which adjustments are common and which are per head |
| Recipe storage | Frequent product or format changes | Required mechanical parts, positions and checks beyond the stored number |
Pneumatic and servo piston: compare the whole duty
| Decision | Pneumatic configuration | Servo configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustment | Often a mechanical stroke setting with air-speed adjustment | Often an electronic stroke and programmable profile |
| Utilities | Drive typically relies on compressed air | Piston drive is electric; other actuators may still use air |
| Product changes | Can be practical when settings and formats change infrequently | Recipe recall can simplify repeated setups |
| Maintenance | Air preparation, seals, valves and pneumatic components | Drive, transmission, controls and product-path components |
| Accuracy evidence | Measured fills under the agreed conditions | The same measured-fill requirement applies |
The stroke equation is a starting point
For an ideal cylindrical bore, displaced volume is piston area × stroke: V = πD²s / 4. With D and s in millimetres, divide cubic millimetres by 1,000 to obtain millilitres.
The useful result also depends on complete refill, valve timing, seals, trapped air and product remaining at the outlet. Reducing the stroke on a large cylinder does not by itself establish reliable control at every small dose.
Recipe record to keep with each format
- Product identity, temperature range and permitted product condition.
- Cylinder/valve/nozzle configuration and any change-part references.
- Stroke, refill speed, dispensing stages and nozzle motion.
- Hopper level or feed arrangement used for the trial.
- Individual head results, complete cycle and the measurement procedure.
- Restart checks after cleaning, maintenance or replacement of contact parts.
Evidence is broader than motor positioning
An experimental study of a servo piston system examined nozzle geometry, flow profile and nozzle-to-liquid relationship as contributors to filling accuracy. That supports testing the complete arrangement; its experimental settings do not establish the right settings for your product. See the published study abstract.
For procurement, ask for a trial at the smallest and largest required doses with the real product and containers. Record results per head and include a pause/restart. A line average can hide a poorly adjusted head.
Buyer questions
Does servo mean the machine needs no compressed air?
Not necessarily. The piston drive may be electric while valves, clamps or nozzle movement remain pneumatic. Ask for the complete utility schedule.
Can one recipe replace all format changes?
No. Container guides, nozzle positions, cylinder/valve parts and closure tooling may also change. Identify those items beside the electronic settings.
Should I choose servo solely for a quoted accuracy percentage?
Compare how the tolerance was measured, at what fill quantity and speed, and with which product. The drive label cannot replace those conditions.
